BHU was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya, with support from prominent figures like Annie Besant, the maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the Maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and lawyer Sunder Lal. It incorporated the Central Hindu College, founded by Annie Besant in 1898.

With a student population of over 30,000, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. MBA: The highest package for MBA students was INR 38 LPA, with an average package of INR 11.3 LPA.
